Frequently Asked Questions

What is GSARP?

GSARP is the Graduate Student and Assistantship Recruitment Program of Northern Illinois University. It is a collaboration between our Counseling, Adult & Higher Education (CAHE) program and the Division of Student Affairs. The two-day event provides prospective students with essential program information and gives them a chance to meet with faculty and staff members. Students will also have the opportunity to interview for graduate assistantships within the Division of Student Affairs.

How many graduate assistantships are available?

Candidates can choose from nearly 40 different assistantships offered by 16 Student Affairs departments.

What can I expect to experience?

In addition to interviewing for Student Affairs Assistantships, candidates will be provided a bus tour of campus, various informational sessions, dinner with the Adult & Higher Education Faculty, a social with current graduate students, financial aid information, a continental breakfast, and a tour of Housing & Dining Apartments.

When is GSARP?

GSARP will run from Friday, March 14, 2008, to Saturday, March 15, 2008. You will be able to check in between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm on March 14.

Will transportation be provided?

Yes, shuttle service will be available. For those who plan on flying, the shuttle will be picking up candidates from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport between 8:30 and 9:30 am on Friday, March 14, 2008. The shuttle will leave DeKalb for O’Hare on Saturday, March 15, at 3:00 pm, and arrive around 4:30 pm. There will be no shuttle service to Midway Airport. Please plan your flights accordingly.

The shuttle will also be scheduled to transport candidates to and from the DeKalb Super 8 Motel, Grant Towers (an NIU Residence Hall), and GSARP event locations over the course of the weekend.

How much will it cost to park on campus?

Candidates who plan on driving are encouraged to park in the NIU Visitor’s Parking Lot. On Friday there will be a $5 fee, payable to the parking attendant upon arrival at the lot. There will be no charge for parking on Saturday or Sunday. Directions to the Visitor’s Parking Lot will be provided in the confirmation letter you receive after registering.

What lodging accommodations can I expect?

Candidates will have the option of staying at the DeKalb Super 8 Motel for $65.00 a night, plus tax (tell Shelley Fouse that you’re with NIU GSARP, and the reservation is under the name Jill Zambito). Please contact Shelley by phone at (815) 748-4688. Candidates may also choose to stay at Grant Towers (an NIU residence hall) for $35.00. You are free to make outside arrangements if you so choose.

How many interviews can I expect?

While there is no limit on the number of assistantshipsfor which applicants may request interviews, you will only be guaranteed interviews for the positions you indicate to be your three most preferred during registration. Depending on the interest that an assistantship generates, the offering department may not be able to grant additional interviews. We will do our best to schedule applicants for as many interviews as possible. Applicants who indicate more than three preferred positions will find out on Saturday, March 15, 2008, whether or not they will interview for these positions.

How much does registration cost?

There is no fee associated with the GSARP registration process.

How can I register?

You can register online at www.gsarp.niu.edu; simply click on the "register for GSARP" link to begin the process. You will not be able to save your progress; therefore, you should set aside 30 minutes to complete the registration process.

Will I have to compete with currently enrolled GAs for positions?

No, currently enrolled graduate assistants have already been offered assistantships. Every candidate at GSARP will be a first-year student pursuing an advanced degree in counseling or adult and higher education.

When can I expect to receive an offer for a position?

Candidates may receive offers for positions as early as March 19, 2008. All offers must be accepted or declined by April 15, 2008.
